A yet-to-be-identified man has committed suicide by plunging into the Lagos lagoon over allegations of theft.

It was learnt that the incident occurred on the Idumota Bridge, Lagos Island on Saturday.

A Facebook user, Ngozi Blessing, shared a video of the incident on her page.

The video sighted by The Herald shows some Good Samaritans making spirited efforts to prevent the man from jumping into the lagoon.

However, their pleas and efforts to grab him were unsuccessful as the man still took the plunge into the water below.

Blessing explained that before plunging into the river, the man disclosed that he was accused of stealing a huge sum of money which he knew nothing about.

The man further said that the police became involved in the matter and he was invited to give his side of the story.

He said that despite explaining that he was innocent of the accusations, he was still ordered to pay back the money in one day.

He said he was barely able to feed himself and it would be impossible for him to raise such money to pay back.

In a text accompanying the video, Blessing said, “He was saying in oyinbo that they framed him that he stole a huge of money which he did not and they said they give him 24 hours to refund the money and he did not steal and for him to eat once in a day is a problem that where did he want to get that kind of money from within 24 hours so he is tired of life and he jumped down the bridge, it happened yesterday night at Idumota bridge in Lagos island. I am tired of this country the man just wasted his life”.
