A 50-year-old man in the United Kingdom on Friday slit his own throat in front of horrified shoppers after he walked into a store to buy a drug but was refused the drug.

According to witnesses, the man walked into a Boots store located in Newcastle-under-Lime, Staffordshire, minutes after the store opened to shoppers around 9am.

He reportedly asked for methadone, but was refused the drug, after which he whipped out a razor blade and slashed his throat.

Methadone is a powerful synthetic analgesic drug which is similar to morphine in its effects but less sedative and is used as a substitute drug in the treatment of morphine and heroin addiction.

Paramedics who were quickly called tried to save his life, but it was too late. He died not long after.

An ambulance service spokesman said the victim went into cardiac arrest after slitting his own throat and was placed on advanced life support, which failed.

Police say they are not treating the incident as suspicious and will prepare a report for the coroner, although investigation into the circumstances that led to the incident is underway.
