Man gets 4-month jail for buying stolen television

A Grade 1 Area Court Karu, Abuja, on Wednesday sentenced a 35-year old man, Auta Mohammed, to four months imprisonment for buying a stolen television.

The convict, a resident of Nyanya pantaker, Nyanya, Abuja, had pleaded guilty to a count charge of dishonestly receiving and purchasing stolen property, but begged for leniency.

The judge, Hassan Ishaq, however, gave the convict an option of N10,000 fine and ordered him to also pay N55,000 to the complainant as compensation.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Vincent Osiji, had told the court that one Aliyu Nadada attached to EFCC Academy, Karu, Abuja, reported the matter at the Karu Police Station, on March 5 at about 3:p.m.

Osiji said the complainant alleged that the convict dishonestly purchased his stolen television from the suspect.

“The complainant on the same date reported a case of theft of three LG Plasma television sets valued at N165,000 against one Moses Christian attached to same EFCC Academy, Karu.

“In the course of police investigation, it was discovered that the convict dishonestly purchased one of the stolen televisions from Christian at the rate of N9,000.

“During police investigation, the television could not be recovered,” he said

The offences contravened the Penal Code.(NAN)
