Shamari Jenkins was pregnant and wanted to settle down, but her boyfriend had different plans, according to court documents released Friday.

Jenkins was “trying to ruin his life and he wanted her killed,” Carlton “CJ” Bryan told one of his friends.

Bryan, 21, was arraigned Friday after being charged the night before with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, carrying a pistol without a permit and second-degree making a false statement.

Judge Joan Alexander set his bail at $2.5 million in Superior Court.

Matthew Allen Hall-Davis, the alleged triggerman, faces similar charges. He is in custody on unrelated robbery charges, police said.

Calling the crime “egregious,” prosecutor Cathryn J. Krinitsky told the judge that Bryan asked a friend to shoot his girlfriend because “the girlfriend has previously decided to have an abortion but decided not to and was now four months pregnant.”

According to the warrant for Bryan’s arrest, he “begged” Hall-Davis to shoot Jenkins, 20. She was shot in the chest April 29 as she sat behind the wheel of her Honda Accord, with Bryan in the front passenger seat, in front of 137 Magnolia St. in the city’s North End.

“Carlton Bryan did not want to have the baby with Shamari Jenkins,” Hall-Davis told police.

Hall-Davis also told police that Bryan “wanted to stay with…his other girlfriend,” the warrant states.
