Barely a week after the crisis in Kaduna in which scores of Nigerians lost their lives, Channels Television has reported that scores of people have been killed and several others injured in fresh killings in Adamawa state on Wednesday.

According to reports there was a communal clash between two communities of Lafiya and Boshikiri in Lamurde and Guyuk Local Government Areas of Adamawa State.

Trouble started when three members of a vigilante outfit were murdered by unknown gunmen while responding to a distress call from a farmer who was reportedly being attacked; the killings resulted in a reprisal on Wednesday.

The crisis which had no religious connotation in the beginning however took a turn for the worse when several houses of worship belonging to both Christians and Muslims were attacked and burnt down.

Witnesses claimed to have heard sounds of gunshots as people scampered for safety in both communities.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abubakar Othman, said although the injured had been evacuated to hospitals they were not aware of the deaths being reported by the locals.

Mr. Othman said further that houses were burnt while four other persons remained missing as a result of the mayhem.

“It was quite an unfortunate situation; these two local governments have been living peacefully for quite some time; that is Lamurde Local Government and Guyuk in Adamawa State. Unfortunately, two young men left for their farms on this fateful day and they never returned.  A day after one of them was discovered dead and the other one critically injured.” He said.

He stressed further that the injured victim was discovered on the other side of the community which is under Guyuk, noting that his relatives believed that they were attacked by people of the other community, which led to the reprisal.

The police however confirmed that normalcy has since been restored in the area after police personnel were deployed by the Commissioner of Police.
