Mexicans have rejected the government’s proposal to legalize same-sex marriage in the country noting that such a move will jeopardize the country’s traditional family system.
Thousands of people took to the street of Mexico City to protest the obnoxious proposal which they see as capable of disrupting family values and marriage institutions.
BBC news reports that Leaders of the National Front for the Family, which organised the march, say they are not opposed to LGBT rights but argued that Mexico has fallen victim of an ideological battle that threatens family values and the institution of marriage.
The spokesperson of the group Mario Alberto Romo, said they were not opposed to gay or lesbian rights, but wanted to defend family values and the institution of marriage.
“In a democratic society you cannot impose a single thought,” said Mario Alberto Romo. He therefore called for a meeting with President Enrique Pena Nieto.
Mexico is a predominantly Roman Catholic nation and there has been mass reaction in the country since Mr. Pena Nieto announced in May plans to change the constitution.
Although same-sex marriages are legal in some Mexican states, President Pena Nieto’s new proposition is to legalize it across the country.
Last year the Supreme Court declared that a ban on such unions imposed in many of Mexico’s states was unconstitutional.
LGBT rights supporters have expressed their unalloyed support for the proposal to legalize same-sex marriage and have been to organizing demonstrations to show their support to the president.
Some their banners during the demonstration read: “I’m gay and I’m a Catholic” and “We also have families”.
Four Latin American countries have already legalised same-sex marriage: Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and most recently Colombia
