Nigeria has overtaken India as the nation with the highest number of extremely poor people in the world.
This is according to data released by the World Poverty Clock, a web tool produced by World Data Lab.
New data compiled in May 2018 show that Africa’s most-populous nation now has 87 million people extremely poor people compared to previous record holder India which is now home to 73 million extremely poor people.
It was further revealed that extreme poverty in Nigeria is growing by six people every minute as poverty in India continues to fall.
In Africa, extreme poverty level is also predicted to increase by 3.2 million by the end of 2018, while the continent already has about two-thirds of the world’s extreme poor.
But Nigerians have taken to social media to react to the new trend.
