MTN back at NCC’s negotiation table with $1.5 billion offer

Telecom company, MTN, has offered the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, the sum of N300 billion to settle the fine imposed upon it by the commission for failing to disconnect unregister subscribers.

The offer by the Telecom Giant was contained in a letter issued by the Company’s lawyer yesterday requesting a trim of the afore imposed $3.9 billion fine to $1.5 billion.

Recall that MTN on February 24 proposed the payment of N100 billion to the commission, an amount it scheduled to pay in five annual installments, purchase of N80 billion of Nigerian sovereign debt, and N70 billion worth of access to its fibre network.

Just last month, the company also paid the sum of N50 billion to the Commission to jump start the agreement and settlement negotiations.

According to the letter, the N300 billion offer is in the “shared interest in the development of the country’s telecommunications sector and economy more generally,”.

The Senate committee on communication on its meeting yesterday to discuss the done has said the negotiation process with the Telecom company will continue for a period of two weeks.
