MultiChoice Nigeria Faces FCCPC Scrutiny Over DSTV, GOTV Price Hike

2 Min Read

MultiChoice Nigeria, the company behind DSTV and GOTV, has been summoned by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) over a planned increase in subscription prices. The new rates, set to take effect on March 1, 2025, will see the DStv Compact package rise from ₦15,700 to ₦19,000, sparking widespread concern among subscribers.

The FCCPC announced that MultiChoice must appear at a hearing on February 27, 2025, to explain the price hike. This comes after the company raised fees in May 2024, blaming inflation and higher costs. The commission is worried that MultiChoice might be taking advantage of its strong position in the market, potentially breaking rules meant to protect consumers and ensure fair competition.

Nigerians are already grappling with rising living costs, and this latest increase has left many frustrated. “It’s getting too expensive to even enjoy TV at home,” said Tolu Adebayo, a subscriber in Lagos. The FCCPC’s move could lead to penalties or force MultiChoice to rethink its pricing if they find anything wrong.

The hearing’s outcome could affect millions of viewers and might set new rules for how big companies like MultiChoice operate in Nigeria. For now, all eyes are on tomorrow’s meeting as subscribers hope for some relief.
