NAFDAC Refutes Claims of Indicting Pharmacy Council of Nigeria Over Counterfeit Drug Distribution

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has denied reports suggesting it indicted the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) for distributing counterfeit medicines in the country.

In a statement released on Sunday, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, clarified that her comments during a March 1 interview were misrepresented. Prof. Adeyeye emphasized that she did not accuse the PCN of any wrongdoing regarding counterfeit drugs.

“The headline is a gross misrepresentation of the facts conveyed during the press interview granted by the Director-General of NAFDAC on March 1,” she said. “Nowhere in the interview did I implicate the PCN in any wrongdoing. The D-G only provided a legal, regulatory, and historical perspective on the roles of the two organizations in ensuring the safety of pharmaceuticals and the challenges that arose due to past regulatory inconsistencies.”

Prof. Adeyeye reiterated her commitment to ensuring the safety of pharmaceuticals in Nigeria and highlighted the need for accurate reporting to avoid unnecessary confusion.
