“It’s you we elected” – Nigerians react as Buhari says only God can secure Nigeria

Nigerians are not happy with President Muhammadu Buhari’s assertion that only God can effectively “supervise” Nigerians border with Niger Republic.

President Buhari stated this during a meeting with former Vice President Namadi Sambo, according to a statement by presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina.

Sambo heads ECOWAS Election Mission to the Republic of Niger.

Hailing Niger’s outgoing President, Mahamadou Issoufou, Buhari said, “I come from Daura, few kilometers to Republic of Niger, so I should know a bit about that country.

“The President is quite decent, and we are regularly in touch. He is sticking to the maximum term prescribed by the Constitution of his country.

“Also, we share more than 1,400 kilometers of border with that country, which can only be effectively supervised by God.

“I will speak with the President, and offer his country our support. We need to do all we can to help stabilise the Sahel region, which is also in our own interest.”

However, many Nigerians that reacted to the comment said that it appeared that President Buhari was trying to shirk his responsibilities.

Uche Okeke wrote on Facebook, “Why do we have a government if it’s now the duty of God to police our borders.

“Indeed, only God is allowed to contest future elections in Nigeria.”

Mine-gibi Anga also, “Then we are DOOMED as a country!

“Because Nigeria politicians don’t really trust in God! Mentioning the name of God in issues like this only shows their incompetence.”

Edward Chigozie Stanley wrote, “Very unfortunate. Why not vacate the office so we all can elect God to lead us.”

Mitchell Austine, “The last time I remembered, we didn’t elected God an. This man is now indirectly telling us that he has failed.”

Olaitan Owoeye wrote, “I was surprised, when a Niger man selling things in our area came back during Covid 19 lockdown.
Nigeria has no boarder with Niger.

“Niger is Nigeria extension. Many politicians from the North are from Niger Republic.

“The best is restructure the nation.”
