National Assembly Shifts Resumption of plenary by two weeks

As 2019 draws closer and the year draws to a close, it would seem the leadership of the National Assembly is reluctant to resume plenary as the lawmaking institution has shifted its resumption date once again.

The leadership of the National Assembly announced that it has decided to shift resumption of plenary by its members from September 25 to October 9; adding two more weeks to the lawmaker’s recess.

The information was disseminated to the public through the clerk of the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani-Omolori who further disclosed that the postponement became necessary because of the primary elections being held by the various political parties across the country.

Both the All Progressives Congress (APC) as well as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have scheduled their primaries within the next two weeks.

Excerpts from the issued statement reads;

“This is to inform all distinguished senators and honourable Members that resumption of plenary session earlier scheduled for Tuesday, 25th September has been postponed to Tuesday 9th October due to the activities of the primaries of the political parties.

All distinguished senators and honourable members are expected to resume plenary session by 10 am on the 9th of October, please.”

This recent postponement may not go down well with certain quarters like the National Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) whose election budget of N242 billion for next year’s elections is yet to be approved by the house.

There also the issue of the defection of the leaders of both chambers of the National Assembly which has lawmakers of the ruling party calling for them to be impeached.

APC Lawmakers loyal to Buhari have accused Senate President Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara, Speaker of the House of Representatives, of refusing to reconvene the assembly for selfish reasons bothering on retaining their leadership positions in the House.
