A final year student of the University of Lagos, Daniel has been abducted by men of the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) attached to Abeokuta Command, Ogun State.
Daniel a resident of Eni Njoku Hostel UNILAG, was abducted in the company of a friend in the Ijoko area of Ogun State where he had gone to collect money promised him by said friend to finance his final year academic Project.
The NDLEA officials arrived at the hotel where his friend was lodged a few minutes after he got there and in their characteristic manner arrested everybody in sight (including the hotel staff) without so much as telling them their offences.
His course mates have tried to secure his release without success; the NDLEA operatives requested for 150,000 to secure the release of the final year student. They threatened that if the money was not raised within the next two weeks, Daniel will be framed, charged to court and sentenced to 7 years in prison.
His friends have been running around trying to gather the money and also calling for help from anyone who can help their classmate escape the fate of many young Nigerians.
Security forces in Nigeria have been known for flagrant abuse of human rights for decades; it has worsened since 2015 where it seems the men who are keepers of the law have abandoned the law and turned to banditry.
With an overcrowded prison system, it is common knowledge that many incarcerated people are innocent people who couldn’t raise money to buy their freedom after abduction by these security forces. Many young Nigerians have been abducted never to be seen or heard from again, some killed while others are languishing in cells across the country with no idea of their offence(s).
At the time this report was filed, no help has come the way of young Daniel; his parents, room-mates and course mates are desperately appealing to Nigerians to come to the rescue of this young man whose only crime it seems is the pursuit of an education.
