Nearly 80% subscribers in EU surf internet via mobile phones

A report on Tuesday by Eurostat, Statistical Office of the European Union (EU), said 79 per cent internet users in the 28-member bloc uses mobile or smart phones to surf the internet.

According to the report, at EU level, 94 per cent young individuals aged 16 to 24 mostly preferred accessing the internet via a mobile or a smart phone.

More than 80 per cent of persons aged 16 to 74 in the EU used the internet in 2016, in many cases via several different devices.

Mobile phones or smart phones were the most popular devices in 2016 by internet surfers in every EU member.

“The highest share was in Spain which is 93 per cent, followed by Cyprus (88 per cent) and the Netherlands (88 per cent).

“The lowest share was recorded in the Czech Republic (55 per cent), and followed by Poland (60 per cent) and Latvia (62 per cent)’’, said the report.

Laptops and desktop computers were also widely used by internet surfers in the EU.

Among member states, laptops were used to surf the internet by 80 per cent internet users in the Netherlands, followed by Finland (78 per cent) and Belgium (78 per cent), according to the report.

However, desktop computers were used by only less than half of the internet users in the EU to access the internet. (Xinhua/NAN)
