An Afro Pop star, Emmanuel Thompson, popularly known as Emex E.O.T, says that the mental health of artistes should be properly managed since their lives are mirrored as role models.
Emex E.O.T told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos that suicide among music folks was not necessary, noting that there was the need for a more determined approach to dealing with fame and domestic issues.
The dance hall and Reggae artist said this against the backdrop of the recent death of a Disc Jockey, DJ XGEE, who was said to have committed suicide.
According to Emex E.O.T, the late DJ XGEE was a bubbly fellow and was successful in his line of business, but wandered what led to the point of taking his life.
“There are so many things artists go through ranging from adequate funding, quality sound production, professional music video directors, instrumentalists, locations for music videos and thematic content.
“Brand endorsement deals, collaborating with other A-list artistes, organising musical concerts and other pressing needs.
“Personally, I believe fame is a good thing but it is how we react and handle fame that really matters. Artistes need to be disciplined and build a culture of excellence.
“We are role models to so many young people out there and some of them mirror their lives looking up to us.
“So, we must always set good examples and pass across positive messages in our musical contents,” he said.
Emex E.O.T said: “Taking your life is not the best solution, our mental health is very important. It is important that we constantly train our mind to be stronger than our emotions.
“Also, check on our friends and family members as often as we can, share words of encouragement, if not we will lose ourselves and the truth is that suicide is not the way out of life’s issues.
“It was quite sad to know that someone like DJ XGEE could take his life someday and I send my condolence to his family and friends,” he said.
The Lagos State-born Akwa-Ibom indigene, told NAN that musicians should look toward collaborating with government on areas of development and better living for the citizens.
“That should be what music is about, to lift the spirit of the downtrodden, bring succor to the oppressed and give hope to all in the society’’.
