The Federal Government has described as fake and unfounded some reports in the social media that the abducted Dapchi school girl, Leah Sharibu has died in captivity.

The Boko Haram insurgents abducted Sharibu and over 100 students from the Government Girls Secondary School, Dapchi, Yobe State in February 2018.

Others have shortly afterwards been released except Sharibu.

Debunking the rumour in a statement issued on Sunday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, described the report as “absolutely fake news. There is nothing like that.”

He said the rumour of Sharibu’s death, which has been in the social media circle few days to the presidential election, was another strategy by the opposition to dent the image of the administration and exploit primordial sentiments ahead of the polls.

“I think it’s part of the opposition’s strategies to throweverything at the administrationand at the President. I think everyday they are realizing the hopelessness of their position.

“Everyday they are amazed by the support Mr. President is receiving from every part of the country and they have decided that they are going to spread falsehood, inflame passion and make this election a Muslim-Christian affair or North-South affair, but people are not listening to them,” Mohammed said.
