The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed the passing of legendary former Super Eagles player and coach Christian Chukwu, who died on Saturday morning.
Chukwu, fondly known as “Chairman,” captained the Nigerian national team to its first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) triumph on home soil in 1980. A commanding defender and respected leader, he was also named the Player of the Tournament that year.
In addition to the historic 1980 victory, Chukwu was part of the Nigerian squads that secured bronze medals at the 1976 and 1978 AFCON tournaments.
“We have lost a good and great man,” NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi said in an official statement. “Chukwu was the definition of a strong, dedicated, and disciplined leader on and off the field. He was not nicknamed ‘Chairman’ for nothing. He embodied strength, vision, and consistency.”
The federation extended heartfelt condolences to Chukwu’s family, friends, and the entire Nigerian football community, praying for strength and comfort during this difficult time.
After his playing career, Chukwu transitioned into coaching, leading clubs and national teams with distinction. He served as head coach of Kenya’s national team, the Harambee Stars, before taking the helm of the Super Eagles in 2002. Under his leadership, Nigeria finished third at the 2004 AFCON in Tunisia.
