Nigeria wins first 2016 Paralympics medal

Nigeria won its first medal at the ongoing 2016 Paralympics Games in Rio on Friday through Latifat Tijani who won a silver medal in power-lifting.

Competing on Day 2 of events at the Games, Tijani won the medal in the women’s -45kg event after lifting 106kg.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Hu Dandan of China won the gold medal in the event with a lift of 107.

Zoe Newson of Great Britain won the bronze medal with 102kg.

Dandan, apart from winning the event, also set a new Paralympic and world record with a lift of 108kg.

The medal placed Nigeria joint 31st at the Games which is scheduled to end on Sept. 18.

Late on Thursday, Hannah Babalola had failed to qualify for the final of the women’s 100 metres-T54 after finishing fourth in Round One of the event.

She had run a time of 17.24 seconds in Heat Two.(NAN)
