The Head of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Abba Kyari, has come under fire from Nigerians for a photo op of his team in a bush on the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway.

A presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad, who shared the photos, stated that the team stormed the area to “hunt kidnappers, bandits and other criminals hiding in the bushes”.

The photo op came a day after the convoy of Governor Nasir el-Rufai saved some persons from dare-devil kidnappers at Akilubu village along the expressway.

According to a statement by his media aide, Samuel Aruwan, the governor instructed his security team to clear the area after he  got to the village around 3:40 p.m. and sighted dozens of vehicles parked by citizens alarmed that kidnappers were ahead.

“The governor also directed security agencies to intensify patrols and permanently clear the road of the bandits,” the statement read.

In apparent response to the governor’s directive, the IRT stormed the bushes and shared photos of the operation.

However, many Nigerians said that making the operation public by sharing photos would only tip-off the criminals, who would run away and return after the team’s departure.
