Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer Questions Tinubu Over Continued Detention Despite Multiple Court Orders
Aloy Ejimakor, counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has called out President Bola Tinubu over his client’s continued detention despite several court rulings ordering his release.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Ejimakor questioned why the Federal Government has refused to comply with multiple judgments delivered in Kanu’s favour since 2022.
He recalled that in January 2022, a court ordered the Federal Government to pay Kanu ₦1 billion and issue a public apology; in October 2022, another court nullified his detention and awarded ₦500 million in damages; and in October 2023, a separate ruling overturned the proscription of IPOB.
Despite these rulings, Ejimakor noted that Kanu remains in custody, describing the government’s actions as a blatant disregard for the rule of law.
“In Jan. 2022, a Court ordered the Federal govt to pay Mazi Nnamdi Kanu N1b & apologize to him; In Oct. 2022, a Court nullified his detention & awarded him N500m; In Oct. 2023, a court ruled against proscription of IPOB. Dear Pres. Tinubu, has MNK become your personal prisoner?” he wrote.
The lawyer urged President Tinubu to respect judicial authority and immediately release the IPOB leader in line with the court orders, emphasizing that no government should place itself above the law.
Kanu has been in detention since June 2021 after his re-arrest and extradition to Nigeria, facing charges related to treasonable felony and terrorism.
