Lawmakers from state assemblies in the North say the region deserves to retain power after President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure elapses in 2023.

The lawmakers said that since the return to civilian rule in 1999, the South has ruled for a combined 14 years while the North would have been in power for 10 years by the end of 2023.

The lawmakers stated this in a communique released in Abuja, where they had gathered at an event to support the presidential ambition of Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.

The Herald can report that Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Matthew Kolawole led the delegation that included four delegates each from 18 states in the north.

The lawmakers however urged Bello to consult widely if he is to realise his presidential ambition.

According to the lawmakers, Bello possesses a combination of youthful energy and requisite cognate experience needed to become the nation’s number one citizen.

The communique read thus: “That every legislator should go back home with a view to advocating and consulting his or her constituents and stakeholders on the presidential aspiration of Governor Yahaya Bello;

“That every legislator should go back home with a view to advocating and consulting his or her constituents and stakeholders on the presidential aspiration of Governor Yahaya Bello;

“The meeting resolved that Governor Yahaya Bello is competent and indeed has cognate experience for the exalted office, the meeting therefore called on him to consult wider across the country;

“That the meeting reviewed the rotational presidency as advocated recently by the Southern Governors’ Forum;

“However, the northern legislators believe the rotation of the presidency should be in favour of the northern part of the country.

“This is because from 1999, the southern part of the country has ruled the country for 14 years, while the North will be 10 years at the end of the President Buhari’s tenure in 2023;

“That a National Working Committee be constituted with a view to having wider consultation on the Governor Yahaya Bello presidential aspiration across the country.”
