Some powerful Northern traditional rulers have been prevailing on former President Goodluck Jonathan to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and vie for the 2023 presidency as heated controversy continues to trail calls for zoning ahead of the next general election.

According to a close associate of the former president, Jonathan has broached the matter to President Muhammadu Buhari and is considering joining APC.

It was learnt that two North-West and one North-East emirs have been in the forefront of trying to convince Jonathan to have another crack at the presidency.

Those in the know confirmed that the deal is for the former president to join the ruling party and get a waiver to contest.

“Currently, Jonathan can only be in office for another four years, then return power to the north. They also believe he could be a stabilising force in the country, especially now that the country is deeply divided,” Sunday Punch quoted a confidential source as saying.
