Northern Youth Council Urges Transparency and Justice in Sexual Harassment, Iniubong Umoren Allegations

The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has called on Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, and others implicated in recent serious allegations to fully cooperate with investigations and uphold the principles of accountability and justice.
The Council’s statement comes amid renewed public discourse surrounding the tragic murder of Miss Iniubong Umoren and allegations of sexual harassment tied to senior political figures. While the family of the late Umoren has publicly exonerated Senator Akpabio from any involvement, NYCN noted that the senator remains a subject of suspicion in some quarters.

In a statement released by NYCN National President, Isah Abubakar, the group emphasized the need for transparency and truth, calling on Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to present concrete evidence to support her claims of harassment.
“It is imperative that we approach such serious accusations with an unwavering commitment to truth and justice,” Abubakar said. “Unsubstantiated claims can cause irreversible reputational damage and undermine public trust in political institutions.”
The group stressed that while victims’ voices must be amplified, accusations must be backed by verifiable facts to avoid miscarriages of justice.
Abubakar reiterated NYCN’s commitment to fairness and the upholding of democratic values. He said the youth expect their leaders to meet the highest standards of integrity and called on Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to clearly communicate her next steps in the matter.
“The time for clarity is now,” the Council said, urging all parties involved to act responsibly in resolving the matter for the good of the nation.
