One Die in Oyo as Junior Secondary School Students Protest Turns Violent

One person was killed on Monday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital as a protest by junior secondary school students in the state turned violent.

School property was also destroyed in the protests carried out by students of community grammar school, Olodo which was allegedly hijacked by hoodlums.

The Oyo State Government also ordered the closure of Community Grammar School, Olodo, over arson following the protests.

A statement issued on Monday in Ibadan by Mrs. Ibironke Fatoki, the Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, said the school was shut following an incident of arson in the school on Friday.

She reported that the violent acts were carried out by some miscreants after a violent protest by junior secondary school students on Thursday.

According to the statement;

“A block of three classrooms and four cars were burnt during the protest. One life was also lost during the two-day mayhem.”

The statement further revealed that the Oyo state government had set up a six-man administrative panel to examine the immediate and remote causes of the incident.

It said that the panel was expected to submit its report within seven working days.
