Mrs Ifunanya Kalu, the wife of former Abia State Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, has confirmed that her husband underwent a major surgery at the Helios Klinik, Wiesbaden, Germany on Wednesday.
Kalu, who was said to be suffering from a life-threatening ailment, was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance on Tuesday after he flew from Abuja to Germany on a Lufthansa plane alongside his wife on Monday.
He has been in and out of the hospital for the past few months, Saturday Sun reported.
Kalu’s wife’s confession contradicts an account by his aide, Dr Madukwe Ukaegbu, who had said that his boss was merely meeting some business associates in Germany.
However, Kalu’s wife said that the ex-governor, who is asthmatic, was not in a coma as reported by an Abia-based online newspaper.
Kalu is the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Abia North senatorial district in the 2019 election.
She said, “Although the surgery was successful, my husband will still have to be monitored closely by a medical team for at least four months in order to prevent complications.
“His condition is improving gradually. He will be fine, if he is able to keep to his doctor’s advice. We appreciate the prayers and kind words from friends, associates, well-wishers and Nigerians in general.”
