Osun Court orders arrest of ex-INEC chairman Mahmoud Yakubu over contempt of court
Despite leaving office as chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), former INEC boss Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu has been ordered arrested by the Federal High Court in Osogbo, Osun State, over alleged contempt of court.
The order was issued just hours after Yakubu’s tenure ended. The Action Alliance (AA) had approached the court, challenging INEC and Yakubu for failing to comply with a judgment delivered by Justice Funmilola Demi-Ajayi in suit number FHC/OS/CS/194/2024.
The court had earlier directed INEC to upload the names of the Action Alliance’s National Chairman, Adekunle Rufai Omoaje, other National Executive Committee (NEC) members, and all state chairmen on its official portal. The judgment validated the party’s October 7, 2023, elective convention as authentic, properly monitored by INEC officials under the party constitution and electoral laws.
While INEC claimed compliance, AA contended that Omoaje’s name was still missing from the portal, even though other NEC and state chairman names had been uploaded—a point the court found unacceptable.
The court order, dated October 7, 2025, and signed by Mr. O.M. Kilani on behalf of the Court Registrar, mandates the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, to arrest Yakubu and initiate contempt proceedings within seven days. The court also imposed a cost of ₦100,000 on the judgment creditors.
