Osun Re-run: SDP Dissociate Party from Omisore’s alliance with APC

As the polls open for the Osun state governorship supplementary elections tomorrow, intrigues have heightened to a crescendo as the National leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has distanced itself from the purported alliance between its candidate in the election Senator Omisore and All Progressives Congress (APC).

This disassociation comes on the heels of a press conference statement issued by Omisore declaring his alliance with the APC to ensure victory for the Party’s candidate in re-run, Oyetola against the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senator Adeleke.

The national leadership of the SDP issued the statement below in reaction to Omisore’s press conference announcement;

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) would like to make it categorically clear that the National Leadership of the party was not part of the recent developments involving our party’s gubernatorial candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore of Osun State, and the conclusions arrived at.

We remain irrevocably committed to serving the Nigerian people on the basis of the vision, principles and goals of social democracy which underlie the philosophy of our great party, the SDP.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared the governorship election held last Saturday as inconclusive, citing that the number of cancelled votes was greater than the margin of wins by the leading party; INEC had subsequently announced a re-run election slated for Thursday September 27.

Since the announcement, Senator Omisore who came third in the election became the bride of the leading parties who sent high powered delegations to persuade the SDP candidate to work with them.

He had been visited by Senate President Saraki on behalf of the PDP and Ekiti Governor-elect Kayode Fayemi on behalf of the APC.

Early on Wednesday however, Omisore had announced his readiness to work with the APC ahead of the rerun, saying he had made the decision after due consultations with the party leadership and members in all the 30 local government areas of Osun State.

He said APC had agreed to adopt SDP’s manifestos in forming a coalition government with SDP in Osun State after victory at the polls.
