Osun State Workers to Embark On Strive Over Unpaid Salaries

Osun state workers have issued a strike Ultimatum to the state government days to the Osun governorship election over unpaid salaries.

The Joint Labour Unions which includes the Nigeria Labour Unions (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Osun state issued a 7-day notice of strike action to the state government over the non-payment of salaries areas, pensions and gratuity after the state workers resumed from a three-day warning strike.

This strike action comes after Osun state workers went for months without their salaries after which they endured half salaries till last month when news filtered that the Osun state government had started paying full salaries to its civil servants.

The workers decided to commence on this particular strike because of the failure of the Osun state government to honour an agreement it reached with the civil servants after a similar strike action over unpaid salaries was called off in December 2017.

A press statement jointly signed by the various Union Leaders was issued to announce the current ultimatum given to the Osun state government.

Signatories to the joint statement include; Comrade Bayo Adejumo, Chairman (JPSNC); Comrade Jacob Adekomi, Chairman NLC; Comrade Adebowale Ademola, Chairman TUC as well as Comrade R.A Oyegbami, Secretary JNC; Comrade Rufus Adeyemi, Secretary NLC and Comrade Akin Olatunbosun, Secretary TUC.

The labour leaders in the state capital in Oshogbo blamed the strike notice on the failure of the Osun state government to address issues raised in the Memorandum of Understanding signed on December 30, 2017.

Excerpts from the statement reads;

“After a critical review of the unbending posture of the government, despite the three days notice strike warning to accede to the demands of workers, the situation fails to provide the expected answer to the amelioration of the workers.

We are constrained to use this medium to give the government a 7 day notice of strike action which will commence on September 10.”

The joint labour unions also insisted that its planned strike action will not be hindered except salary arrears, pensions and gratuity which had subjected Osun workers and pensioners to extreme hardship is paid.
