Otti to Revive Moribund Industries in Abia to Tackle Unemployment and Boost Revenue
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has announced plans to revive moribund industries across the state as part of efforts to tackle youth unemployment, reduce poverty, and boost the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
Speaking on Thursday during his monthly media chat at the Government House, Umuahia, Governor Otti described unemployment and poverty as major obstacles to the state’s development. He said reviving defunct industries would create jobs and stimulate economic growth.
The governor revealed that some long-abandoned companies, including Modern Ceramics, Aba Textile Mills, and International Glass Industries, would be acquired by the government, rehabilitated, and handed over to competent investors for efficient management.
“Our goal is to bring these industries back to life and hand them over to capable investors who can manage them sustainably. This will ensure that the companies do not die again,” Otti stated.
On the recent demolition of dilapidated school buildings across the state, the governor explained that the action was taken to guarantee the safety of pupils and teachers. He said integrity tests conducted on some school structures showed they were unsafe for use due to years of neglect.
“We don’t want a situation where a school building collapses on innocent pupils. Those that failed integrity tests have been demolished, and new structures are being erected in their place,” Otti assured.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to rebuilding Abia’s industrial base and improving the welfare of its citizens through sustainable development policies.
