Outrage as Lauretta Onochie, Buhari’s aide receives INEC appointment

3 Min Read

There has been an uproar on Nigeria’s social space after Lauretta Onochie, Social media aide to President Buhari received an appointment to be Delta state Commissoner of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

President Buhari had forwarded the list of nominees to the Senate for approval on Tuesday.

However, Onochie’s nomination was met with disapproval from Nigerian youths who opined a staunch supporter of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) should not to be an INEC Commissioner, a body expected whose state activities ought to be supervised by a non-partisan citizen.

The concerned youths took to Twitter to express their grievances against Onochie’s appointment.

@MatthewTPage

Lauretta Onochie is one of the most partisan people in Nigerian public life today.

Appointing a take-no-prisoners party spokesperson to serve as a guardian of 🇳🇬’s non-partisan electoral commission is, in my view, utterly negligent and will be incredibly damaging.

@mrfestusogun

The appointment of Lauretta Onochie as INEC Commissioner is unconstitutional, undemocratic and ridiculous.

Section 14 of Part 1 of Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution provides that a person to be appointed as INEC commissioner must be a person of “unquestionable integrity”.

@mrfestusogun

The integrity of Onochie, an aide of Pres. Buhari, is questionable for her clear partisanship and being a card carrying member of the APC.

INEC commissioners should be independent and not partisan. This shameful recommendation must be rejected by the Senate.

@PeterPsquare

@AbdulMahmoud01

Dear General, Sir @MBuhari, in your estimation, did Lauretta Onochie pass the Constitutional muster of Section 14 3rd Schedule of the Constitution 1999 before nominating her as INEC Commissioner?

@bulamabukarti

Appointing Lauretta Onochie to INEC is a contradiction in terms. How’ll you nominate a staunch member of a political party to a body that is supposed to be independent and will make decisions affecting her party?

The Senate should reject her and all others affiliated to a party.

@Salakwa2

Indeed, she has no character to warrant serving in such all important organisation as @inecnigeria

The @nassnigeria must reject her. Her type cannot create any functional system

@ayemojubar

I told you they have burukutu joint inside Asorock.

Lauretta Onochie is their cash madam. 😂
