COVID-19 Lockdown: Group Tasks Plateau Govt. on Palliative for Vulnerable Families

The Plateau Youth and Community Development Volunteers (PLAYCODEV) on Saturday called on Gov.Simon Lalong to provide some form of support to vulnerable households who live from hand-to-mouth.

 

The Executive Director of the group, Mr Nanven Mamdam, made the call in a statement in Kaduna.

He the palliatives would cushion the effect of the lockdown on poor and vulnerable families.

 

Mamdam commended Lalong for shutting down the state to prevent the spread of the deadly Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the state.

“We appeal to the government to provide palliative to poor households who need it most, particularly during Easter celebration and for the duration of the lockdown.

“This will cushion the negative impact that the crumbling economic activities in the state will have on its citizens, especially those whose means of survival is on a subsistence level,” he said.

He urged Christians to use the opportunity of the lockdown to pray to God for healing in the state and the nation from all kinds of sicknesses and rid the country of all forms of insecurity.

According to him, Easter symbolizes the salvation of mankind, adding that what Christians need to do during the Easter celebration is to commune with God to end the coronavirus pandemic and save humanity.

The director also called on the state government to address the issue of insecurity in the state, citing the recent attacks on some villages in the northern axis of the state.

He further urged the government to review and strengthen its security structures, particularly “Operation Rainbow” with a view to improving surveillance, patrol and information gathering.

He pledged the continued support of PLAYCODEV to the developmental effort of the state government through volunteerism and community mobilisation for the success of government policies and programmes.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Plateau government had on April 9 lockdown the state till 11 p.m. of April 15.

Lalong had explained that the measure was to allow authorities carry out a state-wide fumigation against the dreaded coronavirus pandemic.
