Panic As Popular Ibadan Festival Turns Bloody

A popular festival in Ibadan, Oyo state was reported to have degenerated into violence leading to the death of one person.

The Oyo State Police Command on Monday confirmed the sad incident which led to the death of one person in the violence which trailed the public outing of the Ege masquerade in the Egungun festival held in Ibadan on Sunday.

The Egungun festival was marred on Sunday after the Ege masquerade made an outing leading to the assault of several residents and death of one.

The police spokesman, ASP Adekunle Ajisebutu while speaking on the sad incident stated that two suspects have since been arrested in connection with the breakdown of law and order on Sunday.

He further stated that prior to the festival, the police command in the state had beefed up security in the area to stem such occurrence.

He added that the state Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Odude, had warned all masquerades and their followers to refrain from violence.

In reaction, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, has expressed his disappointment at the conduct of the participants of the festival adding that he had held several peace meetings prior to the announcement of the festival.
