Paul Scholes returns to United

Paul Scholes has resumed his coaching role with Manchester United’s youth team.

The veteran midfielder retired at the end of last season after making over 700 appearances and scoring 155 goals for the club. He is currently assisting youth team coach Nicky Butt on a game-by-game basis.

Scholes initially retired from professional football in the summer of 2011 but immediately returned to United in a coaching role and later returned to playing for the team in the second half of the season.

Scholes exclusively told Sportsmail in July that he wanted to take a longer break from football this time before joining up with David Moyes’ backroom staff, where he had been guaranteed a position.

Speaking to Sportsmail, Scholes said: ‘I’ve just been relaxing really. Last time, when I stopped playing I probably went back into it a little bit quicker than I should have done but it’s nice to have a little break. I will look to get back into it as soon as I can really – once I have had a nice holiday. I haven’t given it too much thought about a specific role but it is nice of United to give me the time off and let me know that there will always be a place for me if and when I want to come back.’

The former English international links up with products from the class of 1992, with Phil Neville assuming the role of first-team coach, Ryan Giggs taking on a Player/coach role this season and Nicky Butt managing the United under-19 side in the UEFA Youth League. Gary Neville is a club ambassador and assistant manager of the England national team.
