PDP lost governorship elections in Ondo, Edo state and the recent which was the Ekiti gubernatorial election. It has also lost some legislative seats spread across many states and the federal level.

However, in preparation for 2019, the party has considered it better to change it’s name because some leaders and members of the party who welcomed the plans believed that the image of the party has been severely dented and that the ruling All progressives Congress have continuously mocked the image and set up of the party.
