PDP Leaders Reaffirm Sam Anyanwu as National Secretary, Back Southern Presidential Ticket for 2027

Prominent leaders and stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have thrown their weight behind Senator Sam Anyanwu as the party’s duly elected and substantive National Secretary, in a move aimed at curbing internal disputes and restoring party unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The decision was announced in a communiqué read by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, following a closed-door meeting held in Abuja on Monday. According to Wike, the endorsement of Anyanwu is grounded in the PDP’s constitution and a recent Supreme Court judgment affirming his legitimacy.
“We, therefore, unequivocally reaffirm Sen. Sam Anyanwu as the duly elected and substantive National Secretary of our great party,” Wike declared.

The former Rivers State governor warned that the PDP is heading for “self-annihilation” if it fails to rein in individuals flouting internal rules and constitutional procedures. He stressed that Anyanwu, as National Secretary, is solely empowered to issue official notices for meetings of the National Executive Committee (NEC), National Working Committee (NWC), and the party’s National Convention.
“To finally arrest the inexorable drift towards extinction in the party, the PDP must, without further delay, respect the judgment of the Supreme Court,” he said. “All notices not issued by Sen. Anyanwu and any actions based on them, including correspondences to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), are null and void.”
The stakeholders also endorsed the work of the PDP National Reconciliation Committee led by Senator Bukola Saraki and urged members to support efforts aimed at rebuilding trust and restoring discipline within the party.
In a significant political shift, the meeting further resolved that the PDP’s 2027 presidential ticket should be zoned to the South. Wike said this move reflects a commitment to fairness and national inclusion, particularly in light of the North’s hold on the presidency during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year tenure.
“This is in the spirit of fairness, inclusion, and respect for federal character,” Wike noted.
Attendees at the meeting included former governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), former Senate Minority Leader Philip Aduda, and several ex-lawmakers and senior party figures. Their presence underscored growing momentum among party elders to assert control and navigate the PDP through its latest internal challenges.
