PDP Suffers Fresh Setback as Bauchi Senator Kaila Samaila Defects to APC
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lost yet another seat in the Senate following the defection of Senator Kaila Dahuwa Samaila, representing Bauchi North Senatorial District, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Senator Samaila’s defection was formally announced on Tuesday during plenary when a letter he addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio was read on the floor.
In the letter, the first-term lawmaker, elected in 2023, cited prolonged internal crises within the PDP as the primary reason for his decision. He noted that unresolved leadership issues and factional disputes had significantly weakened the party’s structure both in Bauchi State and across the country.
The exit of Senator Samaila further strengthens the APC’s majority in the 10th Senate. The ruling party’s representation now climbs to 74 seats, while the PDP’s membership drops from 28 to 27 senators. The current Senate configuration leaves the Labour Party with four senators, APGA with two, and the NNPP and SDP with one senator each.
