Peter Obi Urges INEC Chair Nominee Omupitan to Protect Reputation, Conduct Credible Elections
The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has urged the nominated Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Omupitan, to uphold integrity and ensure credible elections if confirmed by the Senate.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday in Abuja, Obi advised the INEC nominee not to put his reputation at risk by failing to deliver free, fair, and transparent polls.
“It is for the good of everybody. None of us is going to be here forever and none is going to be in his position forever. So, whatever position we find ourselves in, it’s to do the right thing. So I wish him well,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor emphasized that Omupitan must remember he would one day leave office and live with the legacy of his actions as the nation’s chief electoral officer.
“When he is confirmed, I will congratulate him and tell him to know that one day, he’s going to leave that post. Let him ensure that he keeps his reputation,” Obi added.
He noted that Nigeria had endured several flawed electoral processes and expressed hope that Omupitan’s tenure would mark a turning point for credible elections in the country.
“Nigeria has had enough rough electoral experiences. What we need is an umpire that can simply do the job of conducting credible elections,” Obi said.
