PHCN Privatization: Massive blackout as staff protest non-payment of entitlements

1 Min Read

Staff of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) have embarked on a protest that is causing power outages in cities across Nigeria. The disgruntled staff are protesting the handover of the Power company to private investors despite non-payment of their entitlements by the Federal Government or private companies.

Speaking to journalists earlier today, staff of the Onike/Iwaya distribution center in Lagos said that there was light available to be transmitted to customers, however they would not provide the light due to their entitlements which government was yet to pay.

Several businesses and homes in the area have had to rely on generators as PHCN officials deliberately turned off the light, choosing to punish consumers instead of taking their greivances to the Federal Government or the private investors.

Only today, media reports circulated that the FG had made over $2.3 billion from privatization proceeds from PHCN. However some of the staff of the PHCN are yet to be paid as was agreed before the privatization process began.
