The police on Wednesday arraigned five domestic workers who allegedly broke into their employer’s room and stole gold jewelries valued at N105 million, in an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.
The police charged Segun Akintola, 49; Tomisin Alade, 28; Felicia Musa, 23; Amaka Irozuru, 38 and Zakara Yau, 38, with five counts of conspiracy, housebreaking, stealing and possession of stolen item.
The police prosecutor, Insp Raphael Donny, told the court that the defendants conspired and broke into the bedroom of their employer, Mrs Oluyemisi Wada, who traveled abroad and stole her gold jewelries worth N105 million.
Donny said the defendants committed the offence with some others(at large) on Nov. 23, 2018 at 9 p. m. at Banana Island, Ikoyi, Lagos.
The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of section 287, 307, 328 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015, (Revised).
They pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates a seven-year jail term for stealing while Section 307 provides three years for house-breaking.
Chief Magistrate B. O. Osunsemi, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N500,000 each with two responsible sureties each in like sum.
Osunsemi ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed with an evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government and have their addresses verified by the court.
She also ordered that the sureties must be blood relations of the defendants and also reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
The magistrate, also ordered that the defendants should be remanded in Kirikiri Prisons pending when the bail conditions are met.
She adjourned the case until March 11 for trial. (NAN)
