The Inspector-General of Police(I-G), Mr Ibrahim Idris said the police would collaborate with the National Council for Women Societies (NCWS) to fight crimes and other anti-social vices in the country.
Idris said this when a delegation of the council led by its President, Mrs Gloria Shoda paid him a courtesy visit on Wednesday in Abuja.
“I will like to seek the cooperation of your organisation and the Nigerian citizenry at large in the fight against crime.
“The force has taken cognizance of the vulnerability of Women in our present society.
“Societal ills against Women such as sexual violence, domestic violence, trafficking and kidnapping of Women by insurgents must be curbed,“he said.
He said that the force had also established a gender and Human Rigths desk at all police commands across the country to check this trend.
Idris said that the activities of the Bring Back Our Girls Group (BBOG) in Abuja were becoming worrisome.
He said that they must not trample on the rights of others as they exercise their own rights.
The I-G warned that the police would not sit on the fence and watch such scenario unfolds.
“The rights of law abiding citizens must be protected within the context of the law, enough is enough,“he said.
He said that the police would establish police posts in all IDPs camps across the country to curb abuse of women and children.
Earlier, the president, NCWS, Shoda appealed to Idris to look into several allegations of rape against policemen.
“Without going into specific cases, we have read with dismay the frequent reports of girls, some as young as four years and Women being raped,“she said.
“We are of the opinion that all such reports should be fully investigated and the law be allowed to take its course,“she said.
She said that research showed that impunity was rife as so many incidents go unreported.
Shoda assured the police management of the continued support and cooperation of the council.
“We see the Nigeria Police and all other security agencies as partners in progress,“she said.
She urged all security agencies to ensure the safety of IDPs at the camps.
“We implore you to prioritise the implementation of safety systems for the Women and children in these camps,“she said.
