Some “Fulani bandits” attempted to rob and abduct commuters on the Akure/Ilesha Expressway on Saturday, the Osun State Police Command has said.

State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Yemisi Opalola gave the confirmation while reacting to a video of the purported abduction of seven commuters by the assailants.

A Yoruba Nation supporter had shared a video claiming that the assailants abducted seven persons.

He said that he arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, which he claimed occurred after Yoruba activist, Sunday Igboho passed through the road.

Igboho was returning from Akure, where he organised a rally to press home his demand for Yoruba Nation, the supporter said in the video.

However, Opalola denied that anyone was abducted.

She noted that the assailants made an attempt but failed to abduct any persons.

“It is true that some suspected Fulani bandits came out of the bush and attempted to rob some motorists along Akure/Ilesha road, by Iwaraja on Saturday, 22nd May, 2021, at about 6:00pm, but for the quick intervention of the Police, JTF and other local security outfits,” Opalola said.
