The FCT Police Command says it has no knowledge of the alleged shooting of journalist and activist, Omoyele Sowore at the Unity Fountain, Abuja on Monday.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, Mariam Yusuf said this in a statement.

Recall that a lawyer, Inibehe Effiong had tweeted that he watched Sowore being shot live on Facebook.

He said that the alleged shooting was done by an unnamed female Assistant Commissioner of Police.

A video of the incident showed the former presidential candidate falling to the ground after being hit.

Sowore’s associate and Convener of Concerned Nigerians, Deji Adeyanju shared a video of the Publisher of SaharaReporters being moved to hospital for medical attention.

Civil society organisation, SERAP demanded an investigation into the alleged shooting.

However, the police said it had no record of the incident.

“The FCT Police Command wishes to debunk the viral message in some sections of the social media purporting that Omoyele Sowore was shot by a female Assistant Commissioner of Police at the Unity Fountain.

“Contrary to the speculation, police operatives professionally restored calm at the Unity Fountain following attempts by a group of protesters to incite public disturbance.

“The protesters who went on the rampage were resisted by police operatives in order to prevent them from causing a breakdown of law and order. There is no record of such incident as at the time of this release,” the police image-maker said.
