Police deny suicide bombing occurred in Ebonyi

The Ebonyi State Police Command has denied that a suicide bomber blew himself up in Afikpo, in the Afikpo North Local Government Area on Tuesday.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Loveth Odah, explained that the person that was killed in an explosion rumoured to be a suicide bombing was a police inspector that was on duty in the area.

She noted that the victim. Mr Idi Aminu, was a Mobile Police Officer on special deployment to Afikpo North LGA at the time.

The police spokesman said that Aminu died after a hand grenade he had with him accidentally exploded near opposite Amizi Amangbala Primary School in Afikpo North and the popular Eke Market in the area.

“He mistakenly hit the lead of his grenade which was hanging on his waist with his elbow resulting in the deadly explosion,” Odah said.

This, she said, caused passersby to scamper for safety.

Odah disclosed that the victim’s remained have been evacuated to a mortuary.
