Olasunkanmi Oyelakin was on his way to Ajah around 6.30am on Sunday but got stuck in the now too common Lagos traffic, around Bolade area of Oshodi.

While waiting for the commercial bus he boarded to meander its way out of the traffic, his blackberry phone rang and he removed it from his pocket to answer the call that came through.

But, unknown to him, a suspected traffic robber who was lurking around the window side of the bus quickly snatched the phone from him and took to his heels.

Because Oyelakin was in the bus, it was impossible for him to give chase.

However, instead of accepting his fate as many would have done, he decided to alight from the bus at the nearest bus stop and monitor the whereabouts of the phone snatcher.

He got to know that the phone snatcher was not alone, and had regrouped with two of his friends who were already telling him to hand over the phone.

Realising that he could not handle the three on his own, he quickly contacted men of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command.

The policemen followed him to the spot and the robbery suspects, Adekunle Mustapha, 21; Popoola Olumide, 20 and Femi Amusa, 20, were arrested.

Mustaphha, who Oyelakin said snatched his phone, allegedly confessed to doing so but pleaded for clemency, stating that frustration pushed him into the act.

On the other hand, Olumide and Amusa who admitted knowing Mustapha, denied knowledge of his alleged act of phone snatching, saying that they were bus conductors in Oshodi.

The duo said they had just completed their apprenticeship and were looking for money to buy tools for their trade.
