Policeman Absconds After Shooting Woman during Lockdown Protest in Delta

A policeman has absconded from his duty post after allegedly shooting a woman during a protest in Sapele, Delta State on Wednesday.

The police officer also abandoned his duty rifle while escaping from the crime scene.

Confirming the incident, the commissioner of police for Delta State, Hafiz Inuwa told the press that the suspect was being trailed so that investigation into the incident could be intensified.

A large crowd of women had protested in Sapele against the coronavirus lockdown put in place by Governor Okowa as well as the lack of palliatives by the government of Delta State.

The women who came out in large numbers protested about the hunger brought about by the extension of the Coronavirus lockdown.

The policeman in question shot the woman on the legs while trying to disperse the crowd.

It was gathered that a mob tried to lynch the officer who escaped, leaving his service rifle behind.

His victim is currently lying in a hospital in critical condition.
