Policeman, civilian shot dead at checkpoint in Delta

A policeman and a civilian were shot dead on Friday night as unknown gunmen sprayed bullets at a police checkpoint in Eku, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State.

A three-man police team was said to be at the checkpoint around 9 pm when the incident occurred.

It was gathered that the assailants, who were in a vehicle, drove towards the checkpoint before shooting indiscriminately towards the policemen.

While one of the policemen was killed, the civilian killed reportedly lit the lamps of the policemen every evening.

Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya confirmed the incident.

She said that the slain policeman was hit in the head and died on the spot while the civilian died in hospital after getting shot twice.

According to the police image maker, the command lost a rifle in the unfortunate incident.

Recall that the police authorities on Friday disclosed how another policeman, Corporal Etaga Stanley, lost his life during #EndSARS protests in Ughelli, Delta State on Thursday.

Another police officer, Sgt. Patrick Okuone, sustained injuries during the incident, where the police also lost an AK-47 rifle.
