Policeman kills election observer in Enugu, blames “accidental discharge”

An election observer was on Saturday shot dead by a policeman in Umuida community, Enugu Ezike, Igbo-Eze north local government area of Enugu state.

The killer policeman was said to have shot the observer, whose identity is still unknown, in the head. The incident occurred near the residence of Ayogu Eze, governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Confirming the incident, the police spokesman in the state, Ebere Amarizu, said it was a case of “accidental discharge”.

It was gathered that the observer had an altercation with the policeman, just as APC supporters and agents at the polling unit confronted journalists and observers.

The consequent security reinforcement from the army and police was said to have created tension within the area.
