The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have given their reason as to why they postponed the Edo state gubernatorial elections scheduled to hold on Saturday to the 28th.

According to INEC this was because of security reasons as they had been informed that there was a very real threat of attacks from insurgents and extremists around that period.

The electoral commission made this announcement last night at 8pm at a press conference.

Recall that earlier yesterday they had decided to go on with the election but have now succumbed to pressure and have finally postponed the elections.

The People’s Democratic party have already made their displeasure known stating that the postponement was a very clever ploy to buy time for the opposition party who they claimed were going to lose come Saturday.

The DSS and the Police had pleaded with INEC to postpone the elections over security fears saying, “While elections are important, security agencies cannot allow the peace of the country to be disrupted. We will continue to be vigilant and ensure consolidation of the successes gained in the current counter-insurgency fight. It is in this regard that we are appealing to INEC which has the legal duty to regulate elections in the country to consider the need for possible postponement of the date of the election,”
