R. Kelly Hospitalized After Alleged Overdose, Lawyers Request Emergency Release Over Life-Threatening Health Concerns

American R&B singer R. Kelly was rushed to a hospital from prison last week after what his attorney described as a life-threatening overdose. The incident has prompted his legal team to file an emergency motion requesting his temporary release from custody, citing serious health risks and threats to his life.
Kelly, 58, is currently serving a 30-year sentence at a federal prison in North Carolina for sex trafficking and racketeering. According to his lawyer, Beau Brindley, the singer collapsed in his solitary confinement cell on June 13 — just days after being placed in isolation. Brindley claims that on June 12, Kelly was administered an unusually high dose of medication while still in solitary, leading to the collapse.

“He was given a dose that jeopardized his life and nearly ended it,” Brindley said, adding that Kelly was rushed to Duke University Hospital. Doctors reportedly discovered blood clots in both his legs and lungs and recommended emergency surgery.
However, before the procedure could be performed, armed officers allegedly removed Kelly from the hospital and returned him to prison — against medical advice.
“He was taken from the hospital against his will and denied the surgery he needs to clear blood clots in his lungs,” Brindley stated. “Hospital records will confirm this. It is undeniable.”
Kelly remained hospitalized for two days before being returned to solitary confinement, where Brindley says he is being held in deplorable conditions, including an insect-infested cell, no access to phone calls, and limited food options. The singer has allegedly refused to eat, fearing possible poisoning.
The emergency motion also includes a sworn affidavit from fellow inmate Mikeal Glenn Stine, who claims there are ongoing threats to Kelly’s life from within the prison, including from staff and white supremacist groups. Stine alleges the overdose may have been a targeted attack rather than an accident.
Following the affidavit, prison officials moved Kelly to solitary confinement for his protection — a decision Brindley believes has only worsened his health and safety.
“This is not a theory,” the lawyer insisted. “He needs immediate medical care. If he remains in prison under these conditions, his life is at serious risk.”
The court is now being asked to urgently grant a temporary medical release so that Kelly can receive life-saving treatment outside the prison system. Two previous requests for release have already been denied.
