It has emerged that Bashir Abubakar, the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to President Muhammadu Buhari, was not removed for disrespecting some senior administration officials as is being reported in some online reports.

The CSO left his job to pursue a refresher course abroad as is normal with officers of his cadre, Sunday Sun reported, quoting an unnamed Presidential Villa source.

The DSS had directed Abubakar to proceed on strategic course at the National Defence University (Fadena), Buenos Aires, Argentina with immediate effect.

Several reports had claimed that Abubakar was removed from his post, and immediately replaced by Mr Idris Kazeem Ahmed, for disrespecting some powerful persons and becoming a one-man cabal whose continued stay had become detrimental to the administration’s progress.

He was said to have disrespected the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Bichi.

But the source said it was a routine exercise for officers of Abubakar’s cadre to leave their posts and embark on refresher courses abroad.

“It is a typical thing to know. One, he does not have any problem with whoever, so I can’t say it is witch-hunt.

“But normally, officers do go on courses. So, even if it is witch-hunt, naturally, one cannot see it as witch-hunt since it is normal for officers to go on course,” the source was quoted as saying.

According to the source, “You can see the improvement in the house (Aso Rock Villa). So, if he was rude to people, he couldn’t have gotten the cooperation of people when you consider what he achieved so far in terms of improving the security of the Presidential Villa itself.

“What he has done, I think you can’t say he has not done well. It is something when you look at the last outing, the presidential campaigns the president embarked on across the states, you can see for yourself, the security arrangements. I don’t even need to tell you that as well. You have seen it. And likely enough, he finished without recording any incident.”
